Philippe strengthens as Ophelia fades away

By Lee Carlaw On Sunday, September 18, 2005 At 2:48 PM
Late last night, tropical depression 17 (yeah, the 17th depression of the year!) developed into the 16th named storm of the season--Philippe. As of 11AM, maximum sustained winds were near 50 mph with higher gusts, and gradual strengthening is forecast. The National Hurricane Center expects Philippe to develop into a hurricane within the next 24 hours.

There seems to be good model consensus as to where Philippe moves in a general northwest track towards Bermuda in the next week. The NHC forecast track is right in the middle of the model spread.

On top of this, Tropical Depression 18 has also developed in the southern Bahamas. It continues to organize rapidly and should become a tropical storm (Rita) later tonight or tomorrow. TD-18 is forecast to move into the Gulf of Mexico and may eventually become a hurricane. The Bahamas, southeastern Florida, and northern Cuba will be effected by this tropical disturbance over the next few days.

NHC forecast for TD-18

Anyone living along the western Gulf Coast should keep a close eye on TD-18 over the next 5-7 days.
