Say hello to 'Tammy'

By Lee Carlaw On Wednesday, October 05, 2005 At 9:07 AM
Tammy formed about 150 miles SSE of Jacksonville, FL this morning. Maximum sustained winds are near 40mph, and some slight strengthening is possible today before Tammy makes landfall later tonight.

As this tropical storm spins inland over the southeast, a strong cold front will approach from the west, in a sense,"catching" Tammy and dragging her northeastward along the eastern seaboard Friday. There is a slight chance the area sees a few sprinkles Thursday evening, but the real 'stuff' comes in Friday morning.

As Tammy is absorbed into the cold front, a new low will form along the cold front, sort of like those wintertime nor'easters we're so famous for (without the snow mind you).

This could shape up to be a rather significant rain event for the region, depending on where the low sets up along the east coast, how long the front stalls, and where the most forcing (the 'trigger' mechanisms for the rain) sets up. Anywhere from 0.5"-3" of rainfall looks to be possible in some locations. At this time, it appears the heaviest rainfall will be east of the I-95 corridor along the eastern shore.

There is still uncertainty regarding this rainfall threat, but details will be worked out over the next few days. We need rain in the metro region...with the previous post outlining that we only recieved .11" of rain last month and are in the middle of a "mini-drought." This system may help at least temporarily appease our rainfall deficit.
